What is involved in a D4 medical

During the D4 medical examination, a doctor will review your medical history. The doctor will discuss any conditions you may have, any medication you are taking and any surgeries you have had in the past. If you are diabetic, this includes checking your blood sugar is controlled.

The D4 medical examination will also test your vision to ensure you meet the required standards. The doctor will perform a quick test to ensure you meet these standards.

A general physical assessment will made during the D4 medical examination. This includes taking blood pressure, checking mobility so ensure you are physical fit to handle the demand of driving a large vehicle.

The doctor will further perform a mental health during the D4 medical which involves checking for epilepsy and any other cognitive impairment.

Ensure you take with you a list of your current medication and any glasses or contact lenses you wear to help you drive. 

Following passing your D4 medical, you can apply for HGV licence or renew you current one.

The medical takes around 15 minutes to complete.
